Boston Bruins at New Jersey, April 1, 2007 at Continental Airlines Arena

Boston Bruins: 78GP; 35W-37L-6OTL; 76 points; Road record: 17-19-2; 5th Northeast
New Jersey: 78GP; 46W-24L-8OTL; 100 points; Home record: 23-10-5; last 10 games : 5-5-0 ; 1st Atlantic

Season series: Despite being outside the playoffs and having a disappointing regular season, the Boston Bruins lead the season series 2-1.

They lost the first game of the series 5-1 at home on December 9. They avenged that loss, taking the following game 5-3 on December 14 at home and by beating the Devils at the Meadowlands 4-1 in early March. Tomorrow's game in the last meeting between the two teams this season. While the Devils clinched a playoff spot and regained the Division lead on Friday night, the Bruins are sure to not participate in the playoffs. They have nothing to play for yet they managed to beat the Senators this past Tuesday.

Devils
The Devils have won three of their last four games. They got almost all their players back this week. Elias, Rasmussen, returned against the Islanders on Tuesday. Madden returned last night against the Flyers. Brian Gionta is set to return from a groin injury tomorrow against the Bruins after missing most of the March action and being placed on long term injury reserve. He has been skating for a while now and couldn't return until tomorrow.

Jamie Langenbrunner who has been sick with the flu last week and was feeling ill over the weekend didn't miss any games and is much better.

On Friday night, Scott Gomez got injured with a bruised thigh. Although he hopes to play tomorrow he had to see how it feels before making a decision.

Tonight the Penguins lost in overtime to Toronto. The Maple leafs had a 4-1 lead and allowed 3 goals to let Pittsburgh back in the game. The last Penguins' goal was scored with 4 seconds remaining. Tomas Kaberle scored in overtime to give the Leafs a much needed win to keep their playoffs hopes alive. The Penguins retake the lead in the division by one point but the Devils have a game in hand.

Bruins
The Bruins lost to Atlanta tonight and tomorrow will be the second leg of a back to back. Tomorrow's game is their last remaining game against a non-Northeast division team.

The Devils have solved their problems at home with a win last night against the Flyers. They are trailing in the season series and just that should be a good reason enough to get up for the game. Boston is outside the playoffs and it is hard to imagine the Devils not taking advantage of their schedule. It would be a concern if tomorrow's game was anything else but a win, with only 4 games to go in the regular season. They pretty much control their destiny. They just have to match Pittsburgh's record in their last 4 games.

The Devils will be home to play Ottawa on Tuesday, then travel to Philadelphia on Thursday. They will face the Islanders on Sunday for the season finale.
Pittsburgh has three games remaining: home against Buffalo on Tuesday; in Ottawa on Thursday; and home again against the Rangers on Saturday.

New Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka dropped the ceremonial opening puck before the December 14 loss. He had just signed a contract with the Red Sox.

In the same game Clemmensen made his second start of the season, stopped 40 shots while facing 45. Clemmensen had a tough game allowing 2 goals in the opening 1:25 on goals by Brad Boyes and Bergeron.

Joey MacDonald, a goalie acquired on waivers from Detroit, made his Bruins' debut on March 4, stopped 26 shots to earn a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

"He was on emergency recall. With John Madden coming back we sent him back. He played very well. He's going to be here sooner than later."
Lou Lamoriello about rookie David Clarkson who got called up and played well: four points (three goals, one assist) in seven games

The Devils have to look for the win. The Penguins just scored a point tonight. It would be good to put pressure on the Pens. The Devils right now are a point behind. A win would put them back on top, one point ahead. There are still some games left and anything can happen but that would just test the Penguins.

Travis Zajac is on a 8 game scoring streak. He has at least a point since the win in Carolina on March 15. He scored 3 goals and had 6 assists for a total of 9 points. Over that span he has assisted on a game winner and had a game winner himself. The total doesn't include the shootout goal he scored to seal the win in Florida. His production is impressive especially for a rookie who just came out of College. It is unusual to see a young player getting better throughout the season and especially towards the end of the season while the length of the season and level of play in College and in the NHL is so different.

Devils beat Flyers, regain top spot in Atlantic

The Devils beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 last night at the Meadowlands. They are now 6-1 against the Flyers this season. They have one game remaining against the last place Flyers, next Thursday. The Flyers haven't had much success in the Meadowlands. They haven't won there in three years.

The Devils took a 2-0 lead late in the second period with goals by Mike Rupp (6 goals) and Travis Zajac (17 goals). The Flyers got on the scoreboard when Simon Gagne beat Martin Brodeur with 5:57 remaining. Jay Pandolfo score an empty netter with 15.6 seconds remaining.

The victory gave the Devils yet an other 100-point season and tied them for first place in the Atlantic Division, second in the conference. They hold the first tie-breaker because they have one more victory than the Penguins.

John Madden returned last night after missing time due to a groin injury. He played over 20 minutes.

The Devils returned David Clarkson to the Lowell Devils.

losing streak at home and first place
The win last night marked the end of a 5-game losing at home for the Devils. It was good to end this uncharacteristic trend since three of the four remaining games will take place on home ice. Besides if they end up with home ice advantage, you don't want to make it easy for teams to come play on your home ice.

100 points
The win also gave the Devils an other 100-point season. They have reached 100 points 8 times in the last 10 years (since 1997-1998). Their record for most point in a season is 111 points in 2000-2001. That year they went to the finals for the second time in a row only to lose in game 7 against Colorado.

Brodeur victory
Martin recorded an other victory, adding to his total and closing in on Bernie Parent's record. He tied Roberto Luongo for the most wins by a goalie this season. They both have 45 wins. If Brodeur wants the Vezina Trophy and to have a shot at the Hart Trophy, he definitely has to finish on top or tied in that category.

Injury to Gomez
After getting everyone back from injury, the Devils lost Scott Gomez after one shift in the second period. Apparently he suffered a bruised left thigh and is day-to-day.

The Devils got scared when Martin Brodeur appeared to be hurting during a goal-mouth scramble two minutes after the opening faceoff. He remained in the game and faced only 15 shots throughout the game.

"That's the bottom line, if we win, then we don't have to worry about them. ... They've been playing so good, but it's in our hands."

Madden, Gionta ready to return

The Devils finally got some good news today. After long weeks of uncertainty, minor leaguer call-ups, short benches, the Devils welcome the news with enthusiasm. Patrick Elias (groin strain) and Erik Rasmussen (shoulder) returned earlier this week. They are pretty sure to get Gionta back on Sunday after he was put on retroactive injury reserve. Gionta has been testing his groin in practice where he skated with contact.

Reports today indicated that John Madden was ready to play. He took part in practice on Thursday and declared himself ready to play after missing seven games. He might return as early as tonight. Out of all the injured players, Madden was a concern because he did not start skating until last Sunday.

Everybody knows the importance of John Madden and the checking line. The Devils have really been struggling offensively in Elias and Gionta's absence. They also have been struggling defensively and Madden's absence is probably one of the reasons.

The news coincide with the loss of first place in the division to Pittsburgh who beat Boston 4-2 last night. Pittsburgh (45-23-10; 100 points) now leads the Devils (45-24-8; 98 points) by two points. The Devils have a game in hand.

Pittsburgh has 4 games remaining, two home and two away games (at Toronto, against Buffalo, at Ottawa, against the Rangers). All these teams are either in the playoffs or fighting fiercely for a place in the playoffs. The Devils have five games left: against Philadelphia, Boston, Ottawa, at Philadelphia, and against the Islanders. Four of those games will be played at home and three of them are against teams who are definitely outside the playoff picture (Philadelphia and Boston). Considering the recent struggles at home, the Devils really need to turn things around at the Meadowlands.

They might need to put on a streak in order to capture the Division. Just like last year.

David Clarkson who has filled admirably and fit in the lineup. The rookie could be useful for added depth in the playoffs. Richard Matvichuk will also be a player to watch in the next few games since Lou indicated he would play before the playoffs.

"Move over. The savior is here"
John Madden to his teammates as he stepped on the ice yesterday. He may have been joking but the Devils definitely look better with him in the lineup.

Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils, March 30, 2007

Philadelphia Flyers: 76GP ; 21W-44L-11OTL ; 53 points ; last 10 games : 3-7-0 ; 5th Atlantic
New Jersey Devil: 77GP ; 45W-24L-8OTL ; 98 points ; last 10 games : 5-5-0 ; 1st Atlantic

Season series:

The Devils have played the Flyers six times already. They hold a 5-0-1 advantage in the season series. There are two games remaining: on Friday and on April 5. Despite their terrible record the Flyers have given the Devils a tough time.

Home, Oct 14, 2006: New Jersey 3, Philadelphia 2
Away, Dec 2, 2006: New Jersey 4, Philadelphia 3, SO
Home, Dec 8, 2006: New Jersey 2, Philadelphia 0
Home, Jan 20, 2007: New Jersey 4, Philadelphia 3, SO
Away, Feb 1, 2007: New Jersey 6, Philadelphia 5, OT
Away, Mar 6, 2007: Philadelphia 5, New Jersey 4, OT

As shown above, two games went to the shootout, two ended in overtime and one was a one-goal game in regulation. The only clear win came on December 8 went the Devils blanked the Flyers.

New Jersey Devils
The Devils are back home after a 5-game road trip. They have a 2-3 record on the trip. Wednesday night's loss have the Devils splitting the season series against the conference leading Buffalo Sabres. The Devils have been struggling in March (5-6-2) and at home (5 straight losses). The month is almost over and the Devils are looking forward to the month of April probably thinking it can't be worse. They were struck with injuries to key players (Gionta, Elias, Madden, Rasmussen, White) and are just waiting for Gionta and Madden to return. Both players won't be available for Friday's game.

Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers have had a dreadful season. They are last in the division and in the league. They will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1994. They have lost their GM and their Coach (Hitchcock) earlier this year. New management has a lot of work to put them back on track and clearly next year is the focus now. Even though the Flyers are losing more than winning, they can have a spoiler role like on Wednesday night when they beat Carolina 5-1 in a convincing way.

You can expect a hard fought game between the two Atlantic division rivals. The Flyers will probably get up for this game and be ready for the Devils. The last couple of games have been pretty physical between the two teams. After the February 1 game, Coach Julien was angered by the dirt the Flyers put on the ice and the play of Ben Eager who was running around all game, was challenged to fight by Mike Rupp and David Hale and refused.

The Devils will host the Bruins on Sunday afternoon. The game will start at 3:30 pm.

The first game of the season was almost cancelled when a water-main break occured. The break was repaired just in time for the game.
On December 8, Brodeur recorded his 84th shutout and tied Glenn Hall for third place overall when he blanked the Flyers.

“We’ll get him in before the end of the year, and he’ll play in a couple of games”
Devils General Manager Lou Lamoriello about Richard Matvichuk, in The New york Times

“To remain as optimistic and as positive as he has is a credit to his personality”
Devils Coach Claude Julien about Matvichuk and his attitude after missing the whole season to recover from back surgery. (Source: The New york Times)

Check out today's article in the New York Times: Waiting Wears on a Defenseman. A good article about Richard Matvichuk's long and slow recovery from back surgery.

Brad Lukowich's heroics
The Devils' defenseman scored 4 goals this year. Three of them came against the Flyers. He scored shorthanded to tie the game on December 2 with 2:12 left in the third period. The Devils went on to win the game in the shootout. He scored again with 49.5 seconds left in overtime in the Devils' win on February 1. On March 6, he scored the tying goal with 5:35 left in regulation. The Devils lost that game but managed to grab a point.

Sabres beat Devils, extend lead to seven points

The Devils lost 4-3 the Sabres last night. The Sabres victory pretty much seals the conference crown. Buffalo has now a 7-point lead on the Devils with six games remaining

Buffalo played an uncharacteristic conservative game to match the Devils style of play and it paid off. The patient Sabres scored early in the second to take the lead with a goal by Jochen Hecht. Scott Gomez tied it a little later on a feed by Elias.

Five goals were scored in the third period. Daniel Paille and Jochen Hecht scored to take a 3-1 lead. Paul Martin scored to get back to within a goal with 6:11 left. Ales Kotalik scored the game winning goal at 15:52. Zach Parise added a goal for the Devils with two seconds left but it was too late.

The Sabres had a little more jump than the Devils having played last on Saturday. The Devils were on the second leg of a back to back involving the Islanders on Tuesday.

They were in the game
Even though they lost New Jersey was pretty much in the game. The Devils obviously fell a little short in the third period after having played the night before. In my game preview I was mentionning the importance of getting in that playoff mode. It is important that they proved despite the loss that they could skate with the high flying Sabres.

Back home
Considering their record at home it might not sound like a good thing to go back home. I believe it is a good thing. They have a lot to prove there and they will be playing the right team to get them going. The Flyers are in town on Friday night and they have always given the Devils a good run for their money. Playing this bad at home is so uncharacteristic that they really have to address this problem starting on Friday night.

Travis Zajac
Devils C Travis Zajac had two assists, increasing his point streak to seven games, during which he has two goals and six assists.

The loss
It pretty much gives the Sabres the conference crown. The top spot seemed within reach for the Devils a couple of weeks ago before the injury bug took their momentum away. The Devils have to regroup now and finish the season on a high note. They control their destiny because they just have a play as good as the Penguins to retain the Atlantic division. The Penguins are on a roll though. They are 8-2 in their last ten games.

"We haven't been playing that great at home, but this is the position we want. We need those games. It will be exciting playing in front of our fans." (Source: Star Ledger)
Center Scott Gomez about going back home after the 5-game road trip.

New Jersey at Buffalo Sabres, Mar 28, 2007

New Jersey Devils: 76GP ; 45W-23L-8OTL ; 98 points ; last 10 games: 5-4-1 ; Road: 23-13-3 ; 1st Atlantic
Buffalo Sabres(48-20-7): 75GP ; 48W-20L-7OTL ; 103 points ; last 10 games : 4-4-2 ; Home: 25-10-3 ; 1st Northeast

Season series:
This is the last meeting between the two teams. The new schedule have teams meet each teams within the same conference four times. The first game saw the Sabres defeat the Devils 3-2 in New Jersey on Dec. 12. It was the beginning of a 3 game losing streak in regulation for the Devils, the first of two such streaks. The second one took place last week when the Devils were missing many key players.

The Devils took the two following games by a score of 3-2, at home on February 3 and in Buffalo on March 10.

Devils
The Devils face the Sabres after beating the Islanders last night. They are on a two game winning streak after losing three games in a row for the second time this year. Last night's game marked the return of Patrick Elias who missed 5 games with a groin injury and Erik Rasmussen who missed 2 with a shoulder injury. The mood is much higher than it was last week. Even though Madden (groin) and Gionta (groin) remain out, the Devils are in a better shape with Elias and Rasmussen back. David Clarkson has filled admirably since being called up, scoring 3 goals and going 3-1 for 4 points in 6 games.

Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres have been good all year. They have led the Eastern Conference for a long time now. They are assured of a playoff spot and are still in the race to win the President's Trophy (best record in the regular season). They are currently tied for second in the league with Detroit with 103 points, 2 points behind Nashville but they have a game in hand with the Wings and two with the Predators. They have the best offence in the league with four players having scored at least 30 goals. They come off a disappointing 4-1 loss at Toronto on Saturday and an unhappy Lindy Ruff made sure they got the message when he skated them hard on Monday. They should be ready for the Devils.

The two teams are sure to take part in the playoffs. The Sabres have been leading the Eastern Conference pretty much all season despite a strong push the Devils made before the rash of injuries. The Devils have been as close as two points behind Buffalo. Tonight is going to be a clash between the best offense in the league, the Sabres have scored 282 goals and one of the best defence, the Devils have allowed 189 goals (6th fewest in the league). After playing a team who is battling to make the playoffs last night, the Devils face a team they might have to face again in the playoffs if they are to make it all the way. Tonight is definitely a good opportunity to send a message.

The Devils go back home after tonight to face Philadelphia on Friday, Boston and Ottawa on Sunday and Tuesday respectively.

The last victory over Buffalo was one of those games where the Devils were missing Brian Gionta (groin) and defenseman Colin White (hand). They then lost Erik Rasmussen after he was hit in the face. It was the second consecutive game New Jersey played with a short bench.

That game also featured the return of RW Cam Janssen after his three-game suspension. Of course he got into a fight with Andrew Peters early in the first period.

During that game Briere became the first Sabres player since Pat LaFontaine in 1995-96 to reach 80 points. He has 89 and could become the highest scoring Sabre ever. LaFontaine scored 91 points that season.

Playoff mode
The Sabres are definitely the right team to start getting into a playoff mode. They are one of the best team in the league and the Devils would be inspired to play a strong game and eventually send a message.

Devils defeat Isles, clinch playoff spot

The Devils beat the Islanders last night. They now lead the season series 6-1. They have one game remaining on March 8.

Zach Parise netted his career-high 30th goal (PP), and Scott Gomez scored in the second period to make it 2-0. Alexei Yashin scored a power play goal in the second to cut the deficit to 2-1.

David Clarkson scored another power play goal to take a 2 goal lead in the third. Blake scored to make it 3-2 with 6:21 left in the game. Clarkson goal proved to be the game winner.

Elias, Langenbrunner both played over 20 minutes in the game, they both had an assist and combined for 9 shots on goal. Rasmussen also returned playing 15:58.

With Pittsburgh beating Washington last night the Devils remained tied for first with the Pens in the Atlantic division. Both teams have 98 points. They play tonight in Buffalo.

Another win
After the recent slide and injury problems the Devils have experienced, this win must feel good. They have now won two in a row and they will take their 2 game winning streak against the conference leading Buffalo tonight.

Zach Parise
What can you say about Zach? I picked him in the things to look for on the game preview and the kid delivered. Again. He will probably be the leading goal scorer this season. Idled Gionta has 24 goals. He is having a remarkable second year. He scored 14 goals and had 18 assists for 32 points last year. He has topped both categories this year, by a huge margin: 29 goals and 27 assists for 56 points.

Playoff berth
This is it. When you look at the standings, the Devils finally earned a little letter meaning something. Either a Y or a X and usually it means something good. Congratulations to the New Jersey Devils who are going back to the playoffs for the 10th straight season. The Penguins also clinched last night with a win against Washington. They will join the Devils for the first time since 2001. The Race is still on!

David Clarkson
He scored another goal. Called up after injuries to Elias and Madden, the rookie is having quite an impact. He scored a power play goal to make it 3-1. His goal proved to be the game winning goal. He has now scored 3 goals in 6 games. It must feel good for the Devils to see a young player coming in during the season and having this kind of production.

The power play has clicked last night
Parise's and Clarkson's goals were scored on the power play. It is always good to see the power play producing: scoring 2 goals on 3 chances, it has been a long time.

Martin Brodeur
Forget Bernie Parent's record, Brodeur beat his own record. He now has 44 wins this season, closing in on Parents but also establishing a career best.

You can't really see anything bad about last night win. I will only say I hope DiPietro recovers. He missed the game last night cos he was experiencing headaches. I know he is an Islanders but I hate seeing goalies hurt and you will probably understand why. Far too often since the league returned, you see opponents running goalies and when your goalie gets blows to the head you can be in trouble.

"It's great anytime you beat your own record, It's a lot of wins for one season. We have a lot of games left and hopefully we'll get some more." Brodeur on beating his record of 43 wins and establishing a new career high.
