Madden scores, Brodeur ties record for most wins

In a determining game and in the first under new coach Lou Lamoriello, the Devils beat the Senators in the shootout.

Martin Brodeur took his firt shot at tying Bernie Parent's 33 year old record and he succeeded. He has now 47 wins for the season. He has one more win than Roberto Luongo who has 46 for the season. Martin Brodeur tied the record on Bernie Parents' 62nd birthday. The irony of things has Brodeur trying to go ahead of Parent next Thursday when the Devils take on the Flyers. It will take place in Phildelphia where Parent played most of his career.

The controversy of that record is that in Parent's time there were no such things as shootouts to determine the winner of the game. Parent had a 47W-13L-12T record while Brodeur has a 47-23 record with seven overtime losses. He worked hard for the win last night, making 22 saves in regulation and then stopping four of six attempts in the shootout.

The game showcasing two of the best teams in the East was scoreless in the first 50 minutes of the game. John Madden opened the score but Daniel Alfredsson tied the game only 21 seconds later.

The shootout was exciting. Nobody scored in the first three rounds. After Vermette scored, the Devils were in a position to lose in the shootout. Langenbrunner responded with a goal, then Comrie scored to put the Senators ahead. Brylin beat Emery to keep the Devils in the shootout. After scoring in regulation, Madden was the hero again when he gave the win to the Devils.

The Devils are still in first place in the Division. They have 104 points, 3 points ahead of the Penguins who were defeated by the Buffalo Sabres. With two games remaining, the Devils need only one point to win the division. They hold the first tie-breaker in case the teams are tied at the end of the season. They have 48 wins to the Penguins' 45.

Scott Gomez missed his second straight with a bruised thigh.

"I think it's a tremendous accomplishment, what this young man has done this season and throughout his whole career. It's just amazing to me. Watching him in that shootout tonight, with that focus and concentration throughout the game, that's the way he's been all year. That whole room is as excited as it could possibly be for him."
Lamoriello about Brodeur who tied Bernie Parent's record for most wins in a season.

"It's amazing. I never thought I would be able to get that far into the wins in a season. I've met Bernie and through the years I got to appreciate how hard it is to get to that 47 plateau. Even with the shootouts, it's still a lot of wins and you have to play a lot of games."
